Dr. Judith Randall is a dedicated and brilliant surgeon, much too dedicated to suit her husband, airplane designer Allan Graeme. Over the course of their marriage, Allan has become more intolerant of his wife's absences, and their daughter Elsa often resorts to tantrums to get attention from her mother. On the night of Judith and Allan's wedding anniversary, Allan has planned a special evening together, but Judith is called away on an emergency. Bitter over being left alone again, Allan goes to a party given by Gail Patterson, an attractive family friend who is in love with him. Gail plays on Allan's unhappiness, and as time passes she wins Allan and Elsa's affection.
