*The Child* (*Ungen*) is a 1938 Norwegian drama film directed by Rasmus Breistein. The film is an adaptation of Oskar Braaten's 1911 play *Ungen: folkeliv i fire akter* (*The Child: Everyday Life in Four Acts*). Set in Kristiania (now Oslo) at the end of the 19th century, the story follows Milja, a young factory worker who becomes pregnant out of wedlock. Her boyfriend, Julius, abandons her for another woman, leading Milja to raise the child with the help of Hønse-Lovisa, a woman who assists single mothers. The film explores themes of love, shame, and the challenges faced by women in a conservative society.
