DESCRIPTION:

Arguably the most important player in the raw and influential Italian neorealist film movement and, in turn, an early progenitor of the French New Wave, Roberto Rossellini will forever be remembered for his supreme grasp of austere shooting techniques and use of civilians as actors. Both sides of the tonal coin are represented in this beautifully realized double feature, which includes two of the filmmaker's most powerful proletarian portraits. The darkly comic crime caper DOV'E LA LIBERTA...' (WHERE IS FREEDOM') stars legendary Italian comedian Toto as a man who feels more comfortable in prison than outside after spending more than 20 years behind bars for murder. ERA NOTTE A ROMA (ESCAPE BY NIGHT) is an emotionally wrought drama about a trio of POWs attempting to seek refuge in the middle of Nazi-occupied Rome. Rossellini's OPEN CITY may be more famous, but these two films are just as awe-inspiring. This installment of DIRECTOR'S SERIES is a rare opportunity to own two little-seen masterworks from an influential neorealist.
