Jean, a petty officer on leave in Toulon, meets Parisian singer Stella Maris while vacationing in Saint-Tropez and becomes her lover. For Stella, it's a one-night stand; for Jean, it's a passion. Despairing of his mistress's infidelities, he deserts. During a brawl in a dive, he believes he has killed a pimp and commits suicide by throwing himself into the sea.
