Arthur Wing Pinero's play was a successful vehicle for Ethel Barrymore; on screen it became a very mediocre Clara Kimball Young picture. Zoe Blundell (Young) and her husband Theodore (Edward M. Kimball) have come up against a bad time in their marriage. Even with a friend's intervention they can't seem to work things out. So they both find lovers, which they finally confess to each other. Zoe believes that the man she's involved with really loves her, but then she finds out he has become engaged to someone else. She's destroyed by the news and jumps out a window to her death. That's how the play ended; leave it to the film industry to tag on a happy, and phony, ending -- next we see Zoe finishing the last few pages of a book, "Mid-Channel." Her husband comes in and swears he will no longer neglect her.
