At the center of the strip are the exploits of the crew of the German cruiser Emden during the First World War. In the twenties the film had been described by some critics as a counterpart to Sergei Eisenstein's PANZERKREUZER POTEMKIN (SU 1925). The spectators were given the right not to break the discipline and mutiny, but to sacrificed heroism and system-conformism. In Austria, "military films" came to the fore in the right-wing conservative circles, according to the style of the Louis-Ralph-Stripe. In the Arbeiter-Zeitung, as early as 1925, it could be read in this context: "Filmproduction is a conjunctural business. Since the thermometer stand of nationalism is at present quite high, the lords of the film industry have become very belligerent, and they are mainly revolving in the history of officers, which have a reactionary, monarchistic impact.
