Marian Marsh's first significant role was as Trilby in Svengali (1931), with John Barrymore. She went on to appear in numerous melodramas of the period, including Beauty and the Boss (1932); her most notable screen role was as Sonya in Josef von Sternberg's Crime and Punishment (1935). Jean Marsh began her film career at the tender age of two; by age six she was cast in several Mary Pickford films, such as One Hundred Percent American (1918) and Daddy-Long-Legs (1919). Comic actor Bert Roach appeared in over 300 film credits during his career, beginning with silent shorts and eventually appearing in features such as Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) with Bela Lugosi and San Francisco (1936) with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy.
