Starring Betty Hutton, Sonny Tufts, Rhys Williams, Ruth Donnelly, Al Bridge
Directed by John Berry

Print: black/white
Runtime: 85 min.
Genre: comedy
Print Quality: B

This 1946 production/1947 release is a slight remake of 1937's "True Confession"---Hutton
sings three songs and Carole Lombard didn't---with the heroine not adverse to telling a
small (or big) white lie when she deems the situation can be improved. Peggy Harper (Betty
Hutton)moves from the chorus line to the position of private secretary to a pawing producer,
primarily so her lawyer-fiancee Oliver Clarke (Sonny Tufts)can be the benefactor of the
producer's truck-load legal business. But she is forced to flee the office one night, to
protect her assets, and leaves her hat, coat and purse behind. It should come as no
surprise that the producer turns up dead and Peggy is accused of the deed...especially with
Preston Sturges-favorite Alan Bridge the detective working the case. Peggy, not doing a
whole lot to prove otherwise, is soon on trial for murder.
