When dashing French officer Charles Edouard de Valhubert (Rossano Brazzi) sweeps Englishwoman Grace Allingham (Deborah Kerr) off her feet, it leads to a whirlwind courtship, a hasty marriage and a baby boy named Sigi. Called back to service while on honeymoon, Charles doesn't return for nine years, having performed his duty for a number of women as well as the country of France. Ignoring her husband's uncle (Maurice Chevalier), who insists philandering is the French way of life, Grace splits up with Charles, unaware their chances of getting back together are being blocked by her son, who relishes the individual attention he's receiving and is determined to keep them apart.
