Broadway Bill (1934)

Starring Warner Baxter, Myrna Loy, Walter Connolly, Helen Vinson, Douglas Dumbrille
Directed by Frank CapraFrank Capra

Print: Black/white
Runtime: 102 min.
Genre: Comedy

From Frank Capra, the award-winning genius behind It Happened One Night and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, comes this rediscovered gem, Broadway Bill. Warner Baxter (42nd Street) and career honorary Oscar recipient Myrna Loy spurn high society to pursue their hearts desires in this winning blend of comedy and romance. Baxters love is horseracing, although track aficionados say he doesnt have a prayer of a chance. Loys love is Baxter, although he at First a is blind to her attentiveness. Assisted by stable groom Clarence Muse (one of the first inductees to the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame), the two leads share laughs, tears and triumph as they saddle their dreams on a beloved colt named Broadway Bill. The horses are at the gate...enjoy!

Riding High (1950)

Starring Bing Crosby, Coleen Gray, Charles Bickford, Frances Gifford, William Demarest
Directed by Frank Capra

Print: Black/white
Runtime: 111 min.
Genre: Comedy

Broadway Bill? "He's the mostest horse we ever did have!" says his handler. He's a lot of movie, too. So much that in 1950, Frank Capra teamed with stars Bing Crosby and Coleen Gray for Riding High, a lively remake of Capra's 1934 gem, Broadway Bill. Der Bingle's fondness for the racetrack is evident throughout this story of a man who abandons the mansion for the stable. And the songs attest to the film's unbridled spirit. There's no need for an address, three square meals a day or luck when you can say "Someplace On Anywhere Road," bake a "Sunshine Cake" or bet the nest egg on what "The Horse Told Me." Many of the 1934 stars reprise their roles here, and Oliver Hardy (minus sidekick Stan Laurel) has a memorable bit as a railbird desperate for a winner.
