As children in Bagdad, Amara, daughter of Prince Cassim, and Ali, son of the caliph, pledge marriage. When the Mongol Hulagu Khan invades Bagdad, the caliph is killed through Cassim's treachery; but Ali escapes and finds refuge with Old Baba and his band of 40 thieves. Fifteen years later, Ali falls in love with Amara without recognizing her. Learning that she is to be married to Hulagu Khan, he devises a plan to rescue her and stir up a revolt against the cruel Mongol at the same time. Disguised as a rich merchant, Ali enters the city with his men hidden in 40 large oil jars. The plot is discovered by Hulagu Khan, and during a celebration, he has the oil jars pierced with spears by members of a dance troupe; but the men have already left the jars. The thieves begin the revolt, and the Mongol is defeated. Ali, reunited with Amara, takes his rightful place as Bagdad's ruler.
