The rumor spread among the Grubers that they are visiting their dear American relative, Menyh Gruber with her daughter, Mary in Hungary. There are different plans to look for a rich relative. The boldest of Balint Koltay's designs is the one who goes straight to Mary's hand. The young people, however, love each other so much that Balint is persuaded by Mary when the "rich" Gruber tells her she has been ruined. At this point, it is only necessary to arrange that Balint, who sells himself as a landownver, can actually show a gentleman's castle before his father-in-law.
