Brother Rat (1938)

Starring Priscilla Lane, Wayne Morris, Johnnie Davis, Jane Bryan, Eddie Albert
Directed by William Keighley

Print: black/white
Runtime: 49 min.
Genre: Comedy

Meet three cadets with major troubles! They must keep a secret for 10 calamity-filled weeks or risk not graduating. Two-time Oscar® nominee Eddie Albert teams up with Ronald Reagan and Wayne Morris for a spirited, behind-the-scenes look at love, laughter and life's hard-fought lessons within a prestigious Virginia military academy. In his screen debut, Albert defies campus rules by secretly marrying the woman he loves. And as if that isn't risky enough, they are now expecting a baby! Luckily, his fellow cadets, "Brother Rats," come to his aid, and all is smooth until the loyal pals become distracted by local coeds and their own attempts to avoid disciplinary action in this "distinguished piece of fresh comedy" (Daily Variety). Based on an original play and costarring Reagan's wife-to-be, Academy Award® winner Jany Wyman*, Brother Rat is the ticket to the "wholesome drama, comedy and laugh-lines" (Daily Variety) the entire family will enjoy.

Brother Rat and a Baby (1940)

Starring Priscilla Lane, Wayne Morris, Jane Bryan, Eddie Albert, Jane Wyman
Directed by Ray Enright

Print: Black & White
Runtime:87 min.
Genre: Comedy

The screwball follow-up to Brother Rat finds "Bing" Edwards (Eddie Albert) two years after graduating from Virginia Military Institute and up for a head coach position at his old alma mater against a fellow alum. On his way to New York to interview for the job, Bing is separated from his family after Commencement – the "Baby" in the title – swallows a diamond ring.

Wayne Morris as Billy Randolph and Ronald Reagan as Dan Crawford add to the fun as old pal Billy entangles the trio in all sorts of chicanery surrounding the "returned" ring, an unpaid C.O.D. package, a priceless Stradivarius violin, fake telegrams and an uncle's beloved model ship… al of which culminate with Commencement alone on a plane bound for Peru.

Returning for the fun with the "Brother Rats" are the cadet's longtime sweethearts from the first film: Jane Bryan, Priscilla Lane and Jane Wyman.
