Ladies In Retirement (1941)

Starring Louis Hayward, Emma Dunn, Isobel Elsom, Evelyn Keyes, Elsa Lanchester
Directed by Charles Vidor

Print: black/white
Runtime: 92 min.
Genre: Drama

As the paid companion to wealthy Leonora Fiske, Ellen Creed (Ida Lupino) has become accustomed to her employer's good humor and generosity. When her deranged sisters (played with great relish by Elsa Lanchester and Edith Barrett) are evicted from their lodgings in London, Ellen invites them to stay for a visit. As the visit turns into weeks, Leonora's patience is exhausted, and she orders the sisters, and Ellen, to leave. Desperate to protect her sisters and give them a secure place to live, Ellen takes drastic measures - then tells everyone that Leonora is on a trip, leaving her in charge of the house. But when the neighbors and Ellen's roguish cousin (Louis Hayward) become suspicious, she has more to worry about than just her sisters' welfare. This gothic suspense thriller boasts great comic performances plus an excellent dramatic role for Ida Lupino. Evelyn Keyes plays a supporting role as the love-struck housemaid. Newly remastered.

The Mad Room (1969)

Starring Michael Burns, Carol Cole, Severn Darden, Beverly Garland, Stella Stevens
Directed by Bernard Girard

Print: Black & White
Runtime:92 min.
Genre: Drama

This compelling remake of the classic Ladies In Retirement stars Stella Stevens as Ellen, a woman living as a companion to her future mother-in-law, wealthy and very irascible widow Mrs. Armstrong (Shelley Winters). Soon after, Ellen's younger brother and sister, one of whom murdered their parents (they can't remember which one of them did it), are released from an asylum and come to live with them. And thus begins a chilling mystery loaded with twists and thrills, as director Bernard Girard (Dead Heat On A Merry-Go-Round) keeps tightening the screws brilliantly. The fine cast also includes Michael Burns and Barbara Sammeth as the kids, plus Skip Ward, Beverly Garland, Severn Darden and Lloyd Haynes. Newly remastered.
