Die Sigende Stadt (City of Song aka Farewell to Love), the film debut of Polish tenor Jan Kiepura, was simultaneously filmed in several different languages, each version directed by Carmine Gallone. The English-language version, City of Song (aka Farewell to Love), was released in London in early 1931. Kiepura is cast as Giovanni, a singing Venetian tour guide who falls in love with British heiress Claire Winter (Betty Stockfield). Only when it's too late does Giovanni discover that the fickle Claire has been toying with his emotions. Fortunately, his faithful hometown sweetheart Carmela (Heather Angel) is around to pick up the pieces. The English dialog for City of Song was prepared by the multi-talented Miles Malleson, based on the original screenplay by Hans Szekely.
